Duration:
12 h
Difficulty:
High
Departures:
October to April
We depart from El Calafate, heading toward El Chaltén, with a brief stop at La Leona for a snack and restroom facilities. Upon arrival in El Chaltén, we will meet our trekking guide and travel by vehicle to the trailhead at the Río Eléctrico bridge. This route offers a more engaging experience, allowing us to avoid retracing our steps. We begin our hike through a forest of *ñire* (southern beech) trees, ascending gradually until we reach the Piedras Blancas Glacier viewpoint. Here, we pause to admire this stunning hanging glacier—a textbook example of glacial geology, complete with cascading seracs, lateral moraines, and a glacial lagoon.
We continue through the forest to the Poincenot campsite, then arrive at the climbers’ base camp, Río Blanco. We take a short break here before tackling the most challenging ascent of the day, leading us to Laguna de los Tres. Before us stands the majestic Fitz Roy, with the Los Tres Glacier and its lagoon nestled at the foot of this imposing granite mountain. The sheer scale of the landscape serves as a humbling reminder of human smallness in the face of nature.
At Laguna de los Tres, there will be time to rest, enjoy lunch, and take in one of Patagonia’s most iconic vistas.
On our return journey, we traverse a diverse landscape, accompanied by crystal-clear streams and small cascades. Along the way, we will also visit Laguna Capri.
Upon returning to El Chaltén—after a day filled with memorable experiences—why not unwind in the village with a delicious craft beer, or perhaps some hot chocolate paired with waffles or homemade cake? You will have 45 minutes to recharge before we begin the journey back to El Calafate.
